Ice Fungi Crystals
Thursday, January 14th, 2010On my way in to work today I noticed ice on the ground for the first time. It was completely covering some grassy knolls outside. I hunched down to have a closer look at the ice and was amazed that the ice crystals were as thin as hairs and look liked nothing I have ever seen before. Ok, so those of you who know me, are probably saying, “This boy is from Miami, what does he know about ice?” Well I know nothing, but I still were looking at these Angel Hair like Enoki Mushroom ice crystals. I picked one bunch up in my leather gloved hands, and squished the delicate crystals. So for me, a boy from the rock bottom, they were magical.

Doraemon, and Blurred Double O’s
Monday, January 11th, 2010Ths poor little Doremon was lost and waiting to be found on a wall in Konodai Chiba, The other blured image is of some posters that I have had my eye on for a while in the stations throughout the Tokyo Subway. Timing can be everything as it was in this pic, as the lens caught the woman in the middle of the O. Thanks to Samm Bennet’s series on Chance Encounters.

Thursday, January 7th, 2010Veselka is in the news, again. When I am in NYC I try to have breakfast at Veselka everyday. It is also good for those late night cravings. I have fond memories of having a slice of carrot cake. Was it late night or early morning? Does it really matter? Anyways, those of you out there in NYC are fortunate to have such a fabulous place to eat, drink and be with friends.

Frog and Kanji
Wednesday, January 6th, 2010Midnight New Years Eve
Tuesday, January 5th, 2010The annual pilgrimage to the shrines and temples of Japan, begins just after the stroke of midnight on December 31. I never venture far, and I prefer to go to the one that is closest to my house. The same shrine my family has been visiting for years. Warm sake, and amazake are served to those who have waited in the cold to say the first prayers of the new year.
