Butterflies Trees, and Lots and Lots of Sunshine

Butterfly Mountain, Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden

I have no recollection of the last time I visited Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, but it most be more than 30 years ago .  Its a park that is not very far from where I grew up.  Filled with all kinds of tropical plants spread out on the edge of Old Cutler Highway and Biscayne Bay.  It is where my mother took a portrait of me under a tree when I was about 3 years old.

It was beautiful walking around the park with my niece and my parents; however, I felt disconnected from my memories of the park.  I couldn’t recollect any of the spaces or places.  I don’t know if it was because it had been too long, or if I just have lost those synapses that connect with those specific memories.

At least today I had the chance to create some new memories with my niece as we walked around and took pictures together.  That is a memory to keep.

Sunny Side of the River

Runner, Bicycles, Apartments Riverside

Sometimes we just feel out it.  It is hard to know why or where it comes from, but there it is.  It is right before us, sometimes seeping way down into our soul.  The important fact is what do what we do?  Do we stay paralyzed and afraid to do anything?

I say, NO!  I know it might be hard, but it is that struggle through the rough patches in our lives that make those vibrant days that much sweeter.    We have to make that conscious decision to seek the light.  To seek out the sunny side of the river if the side that we are traveling on is in darkness.

For me that is the only way to live.  It is easy to say, but to put it into practice take effort.  We need to discipline ourselves to focus on that light that shines into our lives.  If there is no light then it is time for us to go out and find that light.

For me this past Sunday I found that light on the sunny side of the river in a place called Minami Kasai.  It is nothing special.  It is just my daily stomping ground.  The light was there, in a way it was always there, I just had to open my heart to feel it.

Trio Potted Garden with Drying Baskets

A trio of plants potted in small tin planters.  Sitting in the spring time sun soaking up the warmth.  The drying goods too appreciate the warm sun.  They will be ready when the customers come around following the sunset.  A simple day in the sun for simple objects.  Just another day in Ichikawa, Japan on the outskirts of Tokyo.

Monday Dreaming of Saturday

The overcast chilly weather has soaked me to my bones.  I long for those beautiful blue skies of Saturday.

The sun shone so high on Saturday.  It was lovely to be out and about with a cool dry wind blowing though the neighborhood.  The unusually hot summer I suspect has disrupted the natural rhythm of blooming and fruiting of nature.

The wall was just dotted with these beautiful deep hued blue flowers.  Melded into a sky blue sky and the tarred asphalt.  All just a glorious day to be out in my own backyard.

30 Degrees in the Sun

Friday, May 21st, 2010

The sun came out with a vengeance today.  After a few days of rain the mercury hit a high of about 30 degrees Celsius or 87 degrees Fahrenheit.  Not a record breaker yet, but it could be a sign of a long hot summer to come.

I was able to enjoy some of the sunshine on my face as I wandered around Tsudanuma in the long afternoon shadows of this late spring day.  Finding what little treasure that lay ahead.  Those backstreets where the red light district meets quiet suburbs.  All nestled in between the tracks and the asphalt.  All trying to find the space to breathe.

Houses in such a state of decay that no one lives in them anymore.  Store fronts so faded there is only a hint of their vivid past.

Wander, loose one’s self.

Find those treasures.

What ever they might be hiding.

Going Bananas in the Park

There was a little festival happening in my neighborhood.  A nice sign that the weather is warming and that the summer festival season will be upon us.  Time to grab your spare change to grab some food, and take in the delights at the festival.  Get some okonomiyaki, baby castella, and kebabs.  There are so many smells and flavors fill the senses.

Stop I Will Shoot

The first image was taken at a local workshop in my neighborhood.  I must have passed by this front a million times.  I had never noticed how beautiful and balanced the front was.  I guess the main reason I never noticed it was usually there are several cars and trucks in the driveway.  Today it was as clear as the skies.

The second image the sun was just hitting the stop sign.  You know the way light will just hit some object in the late afternoon or the early evening, this was a perfect example of that case.  I had no choice but to obey the stop sign and and SHOOT.  SNAP, SNAP went the shutter.

Both images are a wonderful example, of no matter how many times we tread down the same streets, unless we can shake of the mundane and truly see, it would be just another day.  Instead if you can beautiful enlightening moments can occur.

Pouring Out from the Heart

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

After 36 plus hours of cool weather and rain the the sun was allowed to shine down upon all of us in the Kanto region today.  We were able to open up and soak up those wonderful rays.  My plants on my patio were blessed with yellow rays of light to make them shoot up tall and strong.

This lovely weather caused me to take stock.  No matter the season, we need to find that beauty that is out there.  Open up our hearts and let all the goodness pour in, and let love flow out.  Let there be a bounce in our steps as we trod though the city.  The sky is blue, the concrete is so gray, yet this combination enlightens me.  This contrast of nature and the things that man has built only strengthens my heart and gives me the energy needed to overcome all odds.

The merging of seeming impossible elements.  They all blur and pixelate in my camera until what bursts fourth is love.  At least this is my intention.  It is what I am trying to accomplish with my art.  I do not know if I will ever achieve it, but I know it is the direction that I must travel.

one love.

Kasai Me on a Sunny Saturday

Saturday, May 8th, 2010

Got to chat with some of the owners of the properties I was photographing today.  I always feel like I have been busted when I get asked questions about what I am taking pictures of.

One older lady tried to give me the chairs I was photographing.  I politely said not thank you,  In front of the rusted out stairs the man drove up in his van.  I told him I liked the old building, he then preceded to tell me of an old house in the neighborhood, which it turned out I already knew.

All and all a beautiful sunny day in Kasai.

The sun was out and about yesterday while we strolled around Harajuku.  The light was intense which makes for some rich tones.  A few black and whites from that stroll.  More to come from another stroll about to begin in a few hours.

Myodagani, a little bit of the old

Monday, June 29th, 2009

Wandering around the narrow streets of Myodagani today, there was the

pleasant mix of old, and new.  The rusted, forgotten storefront the size of a

phone both and 2 brightly colored umbrellas drying in the blazing Tokyo summer

sun.
