Decaying Helvetica: TSUDANUMA

I came across this lovely bit of decaying Japanese Helvetica text at Tsudanuma station on Friday.  At first glance I thought it was some attempt at scratching some text onto a pole, but once I really looked I discovered that the apparent scratches were in fact decaying bits of text that spell out the the station name phonetically in the hiragana alphabet.

Fonts, the art of how we communicate with written language are beautiful study in their own simplicity.
